Dental implant or bridge? How to choose when you lose a tooth
Implants and bridges both replace missing teeth, but they work very differently. Compare how each works, who suits which, and how long they last.

Replacing missing teeth, from a single tooth to a full arch.
An implant replaces the root of a missing tooth and holds a crown on top. Implants can replace one tooth or support a full-mouth restoration.
A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth. A small titanium post is placed in the jawbone, and over the following months the bone bonds to it. A crown is then fixed on top, giving you a tooth that looks, feels and functions much like a natural one.
Because an implant stands on its own, the neighbouring teeth don't need to be trimmed, as they would for a bridge. Implants also help preserve the jawbone, which otherwise slowly shrinks where a tooth is missing. They can replace a single tooth, support a bridge for several missing teeth, or anchor a full-arch restoration.
Not everyone is immediately suitable — there needs to be enough healthy bone, and gum disease, uncontrolled diabetes or smoking can affect healing. An examination and X-rays help decide whether an implant is right for you and plan the treatment step by step.
